Spice Pinnacle FHD vs Micromax Canvas 4

Both have identical features and are recently released. They have a price difference of around Rs 1,000.

Spice today announced its latest flagship smartphone, called Pinnacle FHD, for Rs 16,990. The phone is considered as a rival of the recently launched Micromax Canvas 4. Both handsets are recently launched and thus we didn't have much time to review any of them.
Spice Pinnacle FHD vs Micromax Canvas 4
Here we have a comparison of these two phones on the basis of their mentioned features only.
Design and display
The Spice Pinnacle FHD is heavier than Canvas 4 as it weighs 175 grams against the 158 grams of the latter. Also, it has 9.3 mm thickness against the 8.9 mm thickness of Canvas 4.
Spice Pinnacle FHD vs Micromax Canvas 4
Both handsets come with 5 inch screens, but Pinnacle FHD has full HD (1280 x 1080 pixel) resolution against 720p resolution of Canvas 4.
Storage
Canvas 4 has 16 GB ROM of which around 12 GB is available for users to store their content while the Spice handset has 8 GB ROM, of which I think around 4 GB would be available for users. Both though have 32 GB expandable storage slots.
OS and UI
Both smartphones come with Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system but Canvas 4 has created some sort of hype with its innovative user interface. For instance, you can blow or shake the phone to unlock it. Spice has not said anything about the UI of the Pinnacle FHD, but we think it should be the stock Android Jelly Bean UI.
Processor, RAM
Both Canvas 4 and Pinnacle FHD come with 1 GB RAM but Canvas 4 is using a 1.2 GHz MT6589 quad core processor while there is a 1.5 GHz quad core processor in Pinnacle FHD. Though Spice has not revealed much about the processor used in Pinnacle FHD, I think it could be the MT8125 or MT8389, which has a clockspeed of 1.5 GHz.
Spice Pinnacle FHD vs Micromax Canvas 4
Nonetheless, Spice Pinnacle FHD seems to have a slight advantage over Canvas 4 in this regard.
Camera
Canvas 4 has a 13 megapixel auto focus rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera. On the other hand, Spice Pinnacle FHD has an 8 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera.
Battery
The Spice Pinnacle FHD has a bigger battery, 2100 mAh, than Canvas 4, which comes with a 2000 mAh battery. According to Micromax, Canvas 4 gives 8 hours talktime and 220 hours of standby but it has not revealed any further detail.
Spice Pinnacle FHD vs Micromax Canvas 4
Spice has not even disclosed the talktime or standby time of Pinnacle FHD as of now but I think both phones would provide similar results as both come with 5 inch screens and quad core processors.
Conclusion
At this point of time, it's very hard to pinpoint the winner but on the basis of the above comparison, I can say that the Spice Pinnacle FHD has a better display and processing power. On the other hand, Canvas 4 seems to have a better camera and of course double the amount of internal memory than the Pinnacle FHD. I am not particularly excited about the UI of Canvas 4 and a review of the same would only say whether it is a gimmick or a really useful one.
Spice Pinnacle FHD vs Micromax Canvas 4
Spice has cleverly priced the Pinnacle FHD at Rs 16,990 against Canvas 4, which costs Rs 17,999 now but would it make the Pinnacle FHD the winner? We will find out soon.

Nokia Asha 501 review

Nokia recently announced the dual-SIM Asha 501 smartphone with a fresh single-Swipe user interface. The monoblock touchscreen device brings a new Asha software platform to the users and developers. The Asha 501 will be offered on dual-SIM model option as of now for Rs 5,199. Here is our take on the smartphone.
Nokia Asha 501
Design
Nokia Asha 501 is meant for the youth and first time internet users. The device comes in candy bar form factor with monoblock design. There are no keys peeking out or crevices for dust to get collected in the keys. Nokia's budget phones are known for being strong and survive great falls. The back panel hugs to the body in such a way that even when the phone accidentally slips from your hand, it doesn't come out easily along with the battery. Nokia has used slightly stronger than the regular plastic material with the device.
The back panel has bit of glossy finish which makes it easy to slip out of hands. It measures 12.1 mm thick and the phone is deceptively lighter at 100 grams than it appears. Nokia has placed the volume keys on the right side of the phone with the Power/Sleep key is located just under it.
There is just one hard button under the display. Surprisingly, it is a Back key instead of the typical Home button.
Nokia offers Asha 501 in six funky colors - Bright Red, Bright Green, Yellow, White, Black and Cyan. All these devices have a glossy back and none of them have that rubberised matte finish. Despite of its glossy design, the phone is immensely comfortable to hold in the hand. Also the form factor and the display size make it very easy to be controlled with one hand.
Nokia Asha 501
Hardware
Nokia Asha 501 is the typical small display bearing budget phone just like the predecessors - Asha 311 and Asha 308. The Asha 501 packs 3-inch TFT LCD touchscreen display supporting native resolution of 320x240 pixels.
It might not be the best display out there but the 133 pixels per resolution pixel density is decent enough. We do feel that the display could have been a bit bigger.
Nokia Asha 501
Nokia has not specified the processor used and the device packs 64 MB RAM which is decent enough for platform. Nokia Asha 501 supports dual-SIM configuration and requires micro-SIM modules. The SIM card slots and the memory card slot are located under the back panel and are not easily swappable.
The back panel appears to be inspired by one of the Lumia series devices and has a small button that acts out for the speaker. There is a 3.2 megapixel camera without any LED Flash at the rear. There is a 3.5 mm Audio out port on the top next to the standard micro USB 2.0 port. There is no USB-on-the-Go support but the phone does support USB charging.
Nokia has also packed FM Radio in the phone and there are sensors - proximity and accelerometer. The latter is being used by couple of fantastic applications like for composing music while shaking the phone and more. Nokia has packed Bluetooth 3.0 with EDR and supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g for decent mobile web browsing experience.
Nokia Asha 501
Soft Side
Nokia debuts the single swipe access gesture through the Asha software platform 1.0 on the Asha 501. The single swipe access is heavily inspired and designed by the same person who worked on the user interface MeeGo mobile OS. With single swipe, the user can close the open application. Swipe driven user experience brings something fresh to the segment.
The new Asha software platform also brings a new feature dubbed Fastlane. All the activities performed on the interface are logged in a chronological order with latest activity on the top. It's not just an arbitrary list but snapshot of the activity such as the half written message or calendar entry. We found this feature quite interesting and helpful for accessing the latest activities.
Nokia Asha 501
Nokia has worked closely with the developers to offer some great apps. By defaul, the Asha 501 will come pre-loaded with 50 popular apps and 40 EA games out of the box. For that, Nokia will bundle a 4 GB microSD memory card with the device. Apart from that there is a photo editor app, organizer, Alarm app with new interface, and voice memo. Sadly there is no way to sync Google Contacts and you may have to add the manually or other workaround.
The keyboards input really impressed us for it was really easy to choose between different keyboards by simple swipe gestures. What blew us away was language support for different Indian languages by default.
Messaging was quite different than usual as the use of interface is minimalistic which aids is showing ore content without clogging space for static menus.
The options menu button is not available on the screen or on the device. One might actually wonder how to get it? The answer is simple swipe from the bottom of the screen to middle reveals that options panel. Nokia has recently made the HERE maps beta available for the Asha 501 so the users can browse those maps using the phone's cellular triangulation.
Nokia Asha 501
Nokia's new mobile web browser is quite interactive and has packed the Nokia Xpress Browser with rich tiles on the home screen with colour coding. Apart from that, the browser can support multi-tab browsing to access variety of content at the same time. Users can always save a particular website as a tile or a bookmark along with the Apps. The new Nokia Xpress Now feature presents content about top three popular things in India - Politics, Sports and Entertainment. Apart from that, the Social Network apps such as Facebook and Twitter come preloaded on the device.
The phone supports Easy Swap function that means switching between SIM modules can be down within the OS and without pulling out the battery. There is also this cool Nokia Glance Screen double tap function that gives a quick look of the homescreen/lockscreen for missed calls, calendars, weather, etc. Though Asha software 1.0 platform is nowhere close to the Android OS, but it still does a good job of presenting the apps as well as user experience with a very fresh take.
Multimedia
Music playback was immense fun on the phone and it has a decent speaker - which is loud but not clear and certainly not annoying. Watching videos on the phone is fun because the new interface allows resuming the video right from the second it was left off.
Nokia Asha 501
When it comes to camera, the Asha 501 packs a 3.15 megapixel camera at the back with no LED Flash. It can record video on VGA">QVGA resolution at low 15 frames per second. Users can record videos but audio and video quality may not be as amazing when compared to other smartphones with slightly more budget.
Imaging quality was fairly decent and we didn't put our heavy expectations knowing that its meant for the budget segment. Nokia has added some nifty improvements in the camera app and the photo editor bundled is absolutely useful.
Battery
Nokia has held its position strong when it comes to battery in the budget and affordable devices. Though there may not be enough processing muscle, the phones actually last longer than the Android counterparts. Unfortunately, we did not have a second micro-SIM so we managed to test the battery life only on single micro SIM. With a normal usage involving some phone calls, texting, emails, and web browsing activity, the phone lasted for two days. Even with the music listening, the phone managed to go beyond one and a half day easily.
Nokia has reworked and designed special battery for the Asha 501 - at least that is what we were told. It is a 1200 mAh battery and on dual-SIM configuration should offer more than 8 hours of continuous talk time. We were not surprised with this battery for Nokia promises standby time of a month and a half.
Nokia Asha 501
Conclusion
Nokia offers the dual-SIM Asha 501 with headphones and charger for Rs 5,199. The pricing is pretty fair when measured with the value and user experience packed. Nokia also offers 4 GB micro SD card loaded with 50 apps to save you from the trouble of downloading. Yes, the lack of3G network support is certainly a down side but hey, it offers decent web browsing experience over WiFi network.
Though it is a budget level phone, it aims to deliver the experience and features available in the large screen smartphone device. This phone is ideally meant for the first time mobile web users with minimal usage, students and great second phone for calling, texting and social networking. Nokia Asha 501 is the budget phone to consider when one needs great battery life and with limited budget hovering around Rs. 5000.

UMI XII Android smartphone review

Chinese handset manufacturer UMI launched this handset UMI XII earlier this year for Rs 14,000.
UMI XII
The phone has high end features such as a 5 inch IPS panel display with full HD 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution, a 1.2 GHz MTK MT6589 quad core processor, 2 GB RAM, 32 GB inbuilt memory, 64 GB expandable storage slot, 13 megapixel rear camera, 2 megapixel front camera, and a 2500 mAh battery.
UMI XII
Though the features and its price make it irresistible but many have doubts owing to its Chinese origins. A few weeks back we got this phone for review and here is a detailed investigation of its performance, which I think would help you clear your doubts about the performance of the UMI XII.
Design
The UMI XII would remind you a bit of Samsung Galaxy S4. However, despite being just 8.9 mm thick, the UMI XII feels a bit heavy in the hands with its 169 grams weight.
UMI XII
It comes with a shiny back panel, which gives it a very luxurious look but it is thankfully not slippery. There is a wide metal panel that surrounds the phone from all four sides, giving it not only an aristocratic look, but also some protection to its internals during minor falls. The power button and the volume rocker are also made of metals and are placed on the side-metallic panel, which means the keys would last longer than the common plastic physical keys found in other smartphones. However, they are so closely placed that people with bigger fingers may inadvertently press the power key while pressing the volume rocker.
The back panel is made of plastic and feels prone to damage, especially while opening it. Though there was no replaceable back panel in the review unit, we hope UMI would supply one to buyers free of cost, which is becoming a custom in the low cost handset segment.
Display
The UMI XII has a 5 inch display, which comes with full high definition (1280 x 1080 pixel) resolution, which means it has 441 ppi pixel density - one of the best in the industry. Most handsets under Rs 15,000 do not come with full HD resolution, thus the XII is definitely special. Moreover, it is an IPS display, which ensures great colour reproduction and wide-angled viewing. I loved watching movies and videos on this device.
UMI XII
Moreover, UMI XII comes with a curved glass that creates a 2.5D effect - a unique feature that is till now found in costlier phones like LG Optimus G Pro. On top of that the display comes with a Corning II Gorilla Glass coating that is known to give decent protection from scratches.
Storage
If storage is everything for you, then you can blindly opt for this smartphone as it comes with a huge 32 GB of internal memory, of which 24 GB is available for users to store their contents. Even many high-end phones do not come with this much internal storage space.
UMI XII
Also, there is a 64 GB expandable storage slot in the UMI XII.
Camera
The smartphone also impressed us a lot with its camera capability. The X2 has a 13 megapixel auto focus rear camera and a 2 megapixel front camera. While the rear camera is able to capture images at 4128 x 3096 pixel, the front camera claims to capture images at 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution.

UMI XII
UMI XII
UMI XII
UMI XII
The rear camera has great auto focus ability and colour reproduction. However, it is not that impressive when it comes to low lighting photography; but is nevertheless better than most of its competitors. The front camera is also able to capture very good self-portraits. Below are some snaps we have captured using this phone’s rear camera.
Battery
The UMI XII comes with a 2500 mAh battery, which comfortably provides a day’s back up with normal use involving around an hour of calling and an hour of music. We used it for specific conditions like watching movies and gaming. With auto brightness and at medium volume (headset used,) it can play 5-6 hours of video continuously and in gaming too it gave around 5 hours of back up.
Performance
The UMI XII comes with an impressive 2 GB RAM and a 1.2 GHz Mediatek MT6589 quad core processor. Further, it has Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system - the latest Android version as of now. With such a terrific combination it is likely to be a fast device. Thanks to the huge RAM you need not worry while multitasking. As you can see in the snapshot below, I had managed to use seven applications including three heavy games like Max Payne, Blood and Glory, and Stick Cricket. Even after opening seven RAM eating apps, the phone has 693 MB RAM left, which is incredible.
UMI XII
UMI XII
UMI XII
The phone also has a decent 11807 score on Antutu while on Quadrant it got 3888, which too is decent.
Connectivity
First of all, it comes in dual SIM format. There was not any call drop issue but the volume levels are a bit on the lower side, so it may irk some persons.
UMI XII
UMI X2 too is well equipped when it comes to connectivity with options like WiFi (b/g/n), Bluetooth4.0, GPS (with A-GPS support), micro USB and a 3.5 mm jack.
Others
Curiously, the phone comes with some apps that seem unnecessary for Indian users. For instance, there is HiMarket, which is an app store like Google Play store. But all the apps are perhaps for the China region (I do not know the language, but since UMI is a Chinese vendor, I speculate so). Also there is one Baidu input and QQ apps. There is one Youmi Market which too is an app store, but here too apps are listed in the Chinese language and would not be of much use if you don’t know Chinese.
UMI XII
However, it has so much internal space that you need not worry about bloatware.
Conclusion
Feature-wise, the UMI XII is undoubtedly the best at this price point, if you choose to ignore its heaviness and a few unnecessary apps. Of course, it is not the best camera phone in the under Rs 15,000 segment but it is nonetheless not the worst.
UMI XII
Though the phone looks rosy, the biggest problem is its availability and service centres, which is the biggest concern for Indian buyers. A look at the UMI India Facebook page will tell you how people have been facing issues while buying the phone. UMI will not only have to overcome the supply issue but it will also have to work hard to beef up its service centres as soon as possible.
UMI XII
But at Rs 14,000, it is a very good deal as it has the best storage option, best display, latest operating system, decent processor, huge RAM, decent camera and even battery. However, I would have appreciated it if UMI also sold the device with a headset (of course a decent one).
