MUCH AWAITED NEXUS 5 LAUNCHED

Galaxy Nexus 5
After months of leaks and rumors, Google officially announced its latest flagship phone, the Nexus 5, during a press event today in San Francisco. The device will run the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system, and like its predecessor, it will be manufactured by LG.
However, the handset features several key changes, like a bigger 4.95-inch screen, a faster Snapdragon 800 processor, and most notably LTE support. It will be available unlocked at the Google Play Store for $349 (16GB) and $399 (32GB) starting today.
Design
Once again, minimalism is key. Decorated with a simple vertically lined Nexus logo and an even subtler LG logo, the Nexus 5 sports a more subdued and restrained aesthetic that is still sleek. Instead of the lustrous, tile-patterned back that we saw on the Nexus 4, the black version of the 5 features a soft-touch matte backing that, during our brief time with it, we found makes it easier to grip.
Personally, we prefer this new simple look for the durability. As chic as the Nexus 4 was, many reported that its glass back cracked too easily; in fact, two of our own review units fractured as well.
The handset measures 5.43 inches tall, 2.72 inches wide, and 0.34 inch thick, but weighs even less than the previous generation, at 4.59 ounces. Sporting the biggest screen yet in relation to past Nexuses, it has a 4.95-inch Corning Gorilla Glass 3 display. Keeping up with its competitors like the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One, the Nexus 5's touch screen has a 1,920x1,080-pixel resolution and 445ppi. In contrast, the previous Nexus had a 1,280x768-pixel resolution with just 320 ppi.
Although it looks similar to LG's current flagship, the LG G2, the Nexus 5 does not house its key control buttons on the rear. Both its sleep/power button and volume rockers are made from ceramic. As expected, it will come in two color variations: black and white. (The white model has a black bezel and black edges.) Google will also sell a bumper for $34.99 in different colors including orange and gray.
During our briefing, the Nexus 5 felt great in the hand. The slight curve in the back makes it easier to pick it up off the table, and it really does feel light and sturdy.
Core components
Powering the device is a 2.26GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, the same blazingly fast CPU seen in the G2. With this processor, the Nexus 5 is a powerful beast of a phone when you consider that both the Galaxy GS4 and HTC One are speed demons themselves, and run on Snapdragon 600 processors.
The handset features an 8-megapixel camera and a front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera. Google says that it made many key improvements to the handset's camera as well. To compensate for unwanted hand movement, the Nexus 5 now features a small precise gyroscope in its lens for optical image stabilization. However, when we briefly tested it out, it wasn't perfect; there was still some blur in the photos we took despite being inside a well-lit room.
The camera also has HDR+, which fuses together several exposures, as well as burst shots, to make one ideal image. As is common with HDR, it definitely took some time to process a photo when we used the feature.
Google also mentioned that the Gallery has a wireless printing framework built into the app, so developers can easily add printing support, making it that much easier to turn your digital images into tangible photos.
The handset is powered by a 2,300mAh battery and has 2GB of RAM. Additional features include wireless charging and NFC.
During our hands-on, the handset's internal speeds felt fast and very responsive, and swiping left to Google Now (which you can do with KitKat) was swift.
Network compatibility
Google has made two versions of the handset, one specifically for North America/Asia, and another for other regions like Europe. For US consumers, Verizon customers will unfortunately be left out -- this unlocked phone will not support the carrier's bands. It will be compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Sprint.
The biggest update about the Nexus 5, however, is the fact that it will support LTE. For many US customers, the fact that the Nexus 4 was only compatible with HSPA+ was a huge letdown (and a bit odd since the Galaxy Nexus later had LTE). As the Nexus 5 is natively LTE-enabled, however, it is on par with today's competition in terms of data speed capabilities, and that's a big (albeit, a bit overdue) plus for the Nexus family.
What's new with Android 4.4 KitKat
Citing that the biggest challenge with KitKat was limiting its size, Google reported that the new mobile OS has just a 512MB memory profile. That's 16 percent less memory than Jelly Bean takes up, and frees up a significant amount of internal storage space.
Some new features include a more intuitive dialer. Instead of searching for a business through the browser, users can begin typing the name of the business into the dialer (even if it's not in the contact book), and Google will use its back-end servers, powered by Google Maps, to draw up the number.
Improvements have also been made to Google Voice Search and Google Now. Several new cards have been added to Now; the software feature has news cards, including one that keeps you updated on your favorite TV shows. It can also tailor search results to bring you summaries of your preferred topics.
Outlook
Once again, the Nexus 5 brings to the fore some of the best of smartphone technology. Not only does it now have LTE (the absence of which from the last model was seen as a major oversight), it also has a powerful Snapdragon 800 processor, a 1080p screen, and the latest OS software.
But the biggest draw of all is that it's so incredibly affordable. Starting at $349 unlocked, it's a huge value. To compare, an unlocked Galaxy GS4 (16GB) goes for $649, and an unlocked HTC One (32GB) is $599. At under $400, the Nexus 5 will surely be a hit with not just Android purists, but anyone looking for a great handset.

Micromax Canvas 4: Review

PROS
  • Build quality
  • Performance
  • Battery life
CONS
  • Price
  • No real improvements over Canvas HD
  • Low light images not good
Micromax Canvas 4 A210 came after much hype, but initial response has been somewhat subdued because of the fact that while it is costing Rs 4,500 more than Canvas HD, both the phones come with the same processor and display.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
Canvas 4 does have a bigger 13 megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel front camera compared to 8 megapixel and 2 megapixel combination of
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
Canvas HD. The Canvas 4 has also 16 GB inbuilt memory compared to 4 GB in Canvas HD. Apart from that Canvas 4 has some enhanced features vis-à-vis its software over Canvas HD. But overall does the Micromax Canvas 4 justify the price tag? Well, let's find out.
Design
The phone looks better than all other Micromax devices we have seen so far, thanks to metal frame of the phone; it's the first Micromax handset to have a metal frame that surrounds the entire side profile of the phone. And this metal is not just for looks but also acts as an antenna for cellular connectivity.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
The rest of the phone is much like Canvas HD itself: it comes with a plastic back panel which is glossy, and the 13 megapixel camera is placed in the extreme top left corner and is slightly raised. The front is dominated by the display. Metal inserts are also there in the ear piece; power and volume rocker is also made of pure metal.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
All in all, the phone looks premium and there is considerable improvement in the quality of the material used, even the plastics are more solid than ever before.
Display
The Micromax Canvas 4 A210 has a 5 inch with 1280x720 pixel resolution as Canvas HD. This was one disappointment as everyone expected a full HD this time around. But Micromax has indeed improved the display but that like the design is essentially in the quality aspect which has been achieved by including Gorilla Glass on the display which is more durable and scratch resistant than ordinary glass used in Canvas 4.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
The display offers very healthy resolution, so there is no pixilation, colour depth is also great thanks to 16.7 million colour palette. We did not face any issues with the touch also. All in all it is a nice display though there are some issues with saturation level but it is too minor to make any difference.
Performance
Canvas 4 comes with a 1.2 GHz quad core processor on the Mediatek 6589 chipset as the Canvas HD, and not the 1.5 GHz MT6589T processor as most of us hoped. Also it has 1 GB RAM as the Canvas HD.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
However the overall performance is not bad, given that Canvas HD was not a bad performer at all, we never had any doubts regarding that. The phone got 12697 on Antutu benchmark which is more or less same as Canvas HD (12630).
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
The phone has no issues of slowing down and played games like NFS without a hitch. It also managed multi-tasking very well.
OS and User Interface
The Micromax flagship phone comes with Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system which is the latest from Google. However unlike most other phones from Micromax, this one is heavily customised. Its video player allows you to preview a video while you play another one; it allows you to play video in one part of the display while you use other part for something else; it even pauses the video when you look away, just like Samsung Galaxy 4. The music player has customised user interface as well.
Camera
user interface is also changed but only a little bit.
Micromax Canvas 4
The most publicised function is its 'blow' to unlock feature. You can also shake the phone to unlock it. Blow to open is clearly not to my liking at least, though it works just fine. You can change the settings for normal slide to open. It also gets option of face unlock which works well too (but this one is an Android feature and not unique to the Canvas 4).
Micromax Canvas 4
There are a lot of Micromax applications, but most of them are infact websites and none of them is something that you will use too often given that there are many popular apps out there in the Google Play that will offer the same thing without charging you for the service and also offer wider choice.
Camera
The Canvas 4 has a 13 megapixel camera at the back and this is one of the main improvements over Micromax Canvas HD. However given that we are no fan of Canvas HD's camera, we were a bit skeptical about the performance of this camera too.
Micromax Canvas 4
And true to what we thought, its performance is clearly not close to what you would expect from a 13 megapixel camera. However it is a decent camera and offers decent clarity in images specially captured in daylight. Indoors the images get a bit grainy and also produces slightly washed out colours. In the low light condition the performance dips further. In terms of videos however the results are much better. It does capture HD resolution videos.
Micromax Canvas 4
The front camera which is a 5 megapixel unit is a huge improvement over the Canvas HD's front camera. It's great for video chats and is even good for self-portraits.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
We have seen better cameras from Indian brands like the Xolo which come with BIS censors, however as far as Micromax is concerned this is the best that they have offered so far.
Battery
The Micromax Canvas 4 A210 has a 2000 mAh battery, and thanks to some tweaks in the chipset it delivers better battery life compared to Canvas HD. If you use the phone rationally like putting the display on auto brightness and switching off WiFi when not in use, the phone would last for about 1 and half day with medium level usage of around 1 hour of gaming, 1 hours each of calling, browsing and music and one email with push notification and about 1 hour of videos as well.
Micromax Canvas 4
Conclusion
The phone is at best an incremental update of Micromax Canvas HD and if you compare it purely in terms of features and specification, Canvas HD comes across as much better product given its price. However Micromax Canvas 4 has its pluses as well in terms of features like much better camera, and much bigger storage which is a big plus. But the real thing that Micromax has done with this phone is take the quality level a notch above, even the accessories supplied and packaging of the phone feels premium and high quality. This is a big plus as most people buy handsets of MNC brands for their superior quality ignoring much better features of handsets of Indian brands.
Micromax Canvas 4
Micromax Canvas 4
The software side of improvements is more of a marketing gimmick, and in our opinion Google already offers Android Jelly Bean with all the necessary features and phone companies should leave the additional features business to developers only.
Micromax Canvas 4
If you want a quality Android phone with good performance but are willing to pay slightly more for better quality you can consider Micromax Canvas 4, but products like Xolo Q1000S, Spice Pinnacle Pro certainly offer more bang for bucks compared to this Micromax offering.

Gionee Elife E5: Review

PROS
  • Looks
  • Build
  • Features
  • Battery life
CONS
  • No memory card slot
Since the launch of Gionee Dream D1, in the month of March this year the company has launched quite a few exciting android smartphones in India. The Elife series, which caters to the high end, has added a new member to the family, called Gionee Elife E5. Elife E5 has a premium look and feel while it offers a superior set of hardware specifications as well. But what does the device have to show in terms of performance and real life utility? Let's find out.
Look and feel
We all saw the Gionee Elife E3. Now the Gionee Elife E5 is even slimmer and better looking with a unibody design and single SIM connectivity. The device looks good and the white color option we got for review is quite grand. It has a 6.85 mm slim body that surely makes it an object of desire and users can flaunt it all day long without hurting their hands.
Gionee Elife E5
The Elife E5 has a flush front thanks to its feather touch keys. The back panel of the device has a matte finish that continues along its sides as well. The sideways placement of the power/standby key makes it easy to use. All the keys have been placed on the left side of the device making it a little tough for right-handed users, but it only takes a little getting used to to overcome that. The top of the device features an audio connector that makes playing music or connecting to a headset easy as compared to the sideways placement of the audio connector. The right side houses a SIM slot and USB.
Data/charge connector
Overall, the build quality of the device is good. It's lightweight and the company has also given a complementary leather bookstand cover with the device that adds another layer of protection to it. The device has a premium appeal and a super slim design that will definitely be liked by buyers.
Display
The Gionee Elife E5 is powered by a 4.8 inch HD 720p display built using Amoled (Active Matrix Organic LED) technology. Although the display does not feature One Glass solution, the quality and color reproduction is comparable to that of displays featuring OGS.
Gionee Elife E5
The display has good contrast as well as good color vibrancy, which makes it fun for watching videos, images, games and so on.
Gionee Elife E5
The resolution supported by the device is 1280 x 720 pixel at 4.8 inches, making it great for viewing HD movies as well as for playing HD games. The display has a high pixel density that makes visuals look great with no pixilation at all. The color reproduction and black levels are good and the picture quality offered by the display is sharp and vibrant.
Processor and hardware
The Gionee Elife E5 has a Mediatek MT6589T chipset that includes a 1.5 GHz quad core processor along with a PowerVR SGX 544MP graphic processor. The hardware is the turbo processor version of the older chipset that offers better performance. The added muscle is clearly visible in each and every task that the device does and it adds a lot of fluidity to the user interface.
Gionee Elife E5
The Gionee Elife E5 features 1 GB of RAM memory and 16 GB of internal storage. This is the good part but sadly the device misses out on a memory card slot, which has been sacrificed to make it as slim as it is. Although the 16 GB storage of the device is not less, compared to device storage going as high as 128 GB nowadays 16 GB surely sounds small.
Gionee Elife E5
There is ample room for applications and multitasking with a 1 GB RAM and quad core processor. Overall the device feels good and zippy at all times even when applications are running in the background.
Performance and usage
The Elife E5 underwent a lot of application testing, installations, uninstalls and stressing for this review, but it never hung or froze. In terms of performance benchmarking on the Antutu benchmark the Gionee Elife E5 scored 16439 marks putting it at the heels of Google Nexus 7, which is a quad core device; and above the older HTC One X android smartphone with a quad core Nvidia Tegra processor. To be doubly sure we tested the device with Qualcomm's Vellamo benchmark as well and it too showed similar results, with the device scoring 555 points in Velammo's metal or hardware test and 1646 points in the HTML 5 test.
Gionee Elife E5
The call performance of this device is good too and calls are received and made without any issue. The earpiece and loudspeaker volume is abundant and the microphone is also loud and clear. In such slim devices the loudspeaker is usually weak, but on the Gionee Elife E5 it is powerful and does full justice to sounds.
Gionee Elife E5
The 4.8 inch display is a major plus point of this device. Even its touch sensitivity is very accurate.
Operating system
The Elife E5 comes with Google Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system with a custom interface, which is Gionee's proprietary interface and is very intuitive as well. The number of home screens can be increased or reduced to accommodate more stuff. Even the lock screens get a multi windows interface that offers quick access to apps and utilities and it can be customized easily as well.
Gionee Elife E5
The overall experience of the device is good and the company will roll out upgrades in future. The device features OTA Over the Air upgrade system, which makes the delivery of updates faster.
Camera and multimedia
Gionee Elife E5 comes with an 8 megapixel camera at the back that offers great variance in colors and full HD 1080p video recording as well at 30 frames/sec. The auto focus mechanism however is marginally slower and that might be a hindrance in quick image captures resulting in blurry images, especially when the shutter speed is increased. Overall, the camera is nice, plus the lock screen window dedicated to the camera can be used for lightning fast image captures.
Gionee Elife E5
The image quality of the camera is good in both the outdoor and the indoor modes. The LED flash comes in handy wherever illumination is needed but it is only effective for very close objects. The front camera is a 5 megapixel fixed focus one. The fixed focus limits usage but to keep the slimness, designers had to make sacrifices and yet there are no complaints with the fixed focus camera as it does a good job.
Gionee Elife E5
On the multimedia front this device features support for all generic android formats, plus like on any android device there's a plethora of applications available at the android marketplace. There is also stereo FM, which supports high definition recording and automatic signal boost feature for low signal areas.
Battery life
The device manages power quite sensibly and offers better battery backup. Plus, the DU battery saver application has been pre loaded on the device, making battery life improvements essential. The 2000 mAh battery pack cannot be called small and the designers have done a brilliant job keeping it inside a slim device that measures only 6.85 mm. The device manages a good 1 to 1.5 days of nominal usage with balanced calling, gaming and multimedia, while too much gaming drains the battery within 4 hours flat.
Finally
With a price of Rs 20,999 the device has features and functionality in a slim profile that is unparalleled to what brands like Samsung, LG, Sony and even HTC offer. But yet again the problem would be the newness of the brand and lack of retail availability of devices. The Gionee Elife E5 flaunts a superb design, and great hardware and software, but the brand seriously needs to create some on ground presence in the market.
Gionee Elife E5
With a device like E5 Gionee will be in competition with brands like Micromax that have been in the Indian market for quite some time now.
